Opening up to different perspectives: Madalynn Lauria

When Madalynn Lauria was approached by Nedap about three years ago, she was pleasantly surprised by the company's approach. Instead of focusing on her proven track record, they looked at who she was and what she could bring to the table. Focusing on the person instead of a profile suits her, as does the international aspect of the job. She enjoys both working with colleagues across the globe on challenging projects or just having a casual chat with them during the weekly virtual coffees. Never before has she felt so globally connected when catching up with colleagues from different time zones, which she sees as a positive side effect of Covid. When the teams starts to travel again, it is clear it will be easy to pick up the thread with each other as the team has before. Whether it's during an intensive training course in Groenlo or after work somewhere in a karaoke bar. 

Only when you step back do you notice that how you see something is not always the same as how someone else sees it. That triggers me tremendously.

Crossing the ocean

Madalynn did not originally catch the travel bug in her hometown. She grew up in New York with all of her family just thirty minutes away. Nonetheless, she has always been driven to step outside her comfort zone, always thinking "how can I challenge myself even more?" 

Heading to another continent for the first time felt like a logical step, so she flew to Spain to study a semester in Seville. Regarding the experience, Madalynn reflected, "It felt like a breath of fresh air. Only when you step back do you notice that how you see something is not always the same as how someone else sees it. That triggers me tremendously. For some people it's fine to always stay in one place, but I find it enriching to be open to other ways of thinking and perspectives."

Since this experience abroad, traveling and experiencing new cultures firsthand has become somewhat of an addiction which has been supported and expanded by her career at Nedap. 

Making the connection

The last two years of her Applied Psychology studies she worked with non-verbal autistic children. Here she was also challenged daily to communicate and think in a different way. To be successful in this role she had to put herself in her student's shoes and get creative with ways to effectively communicate. She describes this position as a unique experience but also emotional work, which played a role in her decision to use this unique set of skills in a business environment.

Thanks to her studies, she can quickly connect with others and see the difference between an emotional or business challenge with her clients. Her golden rule is that selling always starts with building a relationship. "Interest, transparency, no false promises and never just say 'yes' to everything."  

No competition, just support

As a Global Account Executive, she guides her clients through the entire process of understanding, vetting, and purchasing RFID technology. During the pandemic, it has become even clearer to retailers that without RFID, they cannot keep up with the competition. The team has an enormous drive to further expand the business and there is no question of a quiet summer. 

In discussing her experience working at Nedap as a whole Madalynn described, "You get so much trust and autonomy within Nedap, that it makes you want to be successful and see the business grow. It creates a bond with the organization as a whole, as colleagues we are each other's cheerleaders. There is no negative competition among our team, just support."
